The exhibition celebrated the 100th anniversary of Luis Buñuel's birth (Calanda, Teruel, 1900-Mexico City, 1983), a journey through the life and work of this filmmaker who saw his first movie when he was eight years old at the Farrusini cinema in Zaragoza.

 

The exhibition explored his career in relation to changes and trends that defined the culture of the 20th century in the places where he lived: Spain and the Vanguard during the first third of the century, Surrealist Paris, the Mexico of the Spanish exiles, and the Spain that went through the artistic and intellectual renewal of the 1960s. The show included oil paintings, drawings, collages and sculptures, and a wide selection of original documents, some of them unpublished, such as letters, photographs, film scripts, and books dedicated to him. Some of Buñuel's early films were shown, as well as films that especially influenced him, and several documentaries made about his work.
 
Several public and private institutions contributed original material for this exhibition, including the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno and the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation. In Madrid, the exhibition was presented simultaneously at two locations: the Residencia de Estudiantes displayed the section dedicated to 1900-1937, and the Museo Colecciones ICO showed 1938-1983.
